Plastics are a way of life and they are here to stay. There’s no way we can totally eliminate them from our lives. But we need to look carefully at the ways they are getting into our bodies and make changes. My research on plastics and how they can affect our health has been ongoing. It seems that each year, I discover new ways plastics can impact our health. So let’s look at these seven ways we eat plastics and don’t know it, and how it can impact our health:
1. Drinking from plastic water bottles and Styrofoam cups. These are two of the worst, especially when the plastic bottles get exposed to warmth, and the styrofoam cups contain hot liquids.
2. Brewing of coffee and tea. Look inside your coffee maker. Are you boiling water and brewing through plastic? Most home coffee makers in the US boil water in plastic and also brew the coffee through plastic. Not a good idea. Are your tea bags made from plastic? I hope not. You can always use looseleaf tea with stainless steel tea brewers that you place the tea in before brewing in hot water.
3. Food packaging and storage. Consider storing in glass containers. I use Pyrex containers with silicone tops for all my refrigerator and freezer storage now. You won’t be able to eliminate all plastic wrap used in grocery stores on your food. It’s everywhere.
4. Tap water. Drinking water quality is constantly in the news. It was Flint Michigan in 2014 that first got everyone’s attention. Recent research shows that 94 % of our US water supply contains microplastics. It’s best to filter your drinking water in these days.
5. Children’s toys, cups, and bottles. Nursing never looked so good. Look for resin code 2, 4, and 7 if BPA-free for bottles and children’s items. when your children transition to sippy cups, look for ones that are stainless steel with silicone tops.
6. Plastic cutting boards. After all the research, I was chopping vegetables and it hit me. How many microplastics are released when I use my plastic chopping board? A study at the University of North Dakota found that cutting carrots on a plastic board can generate as much as 15 milligrams of microplastics per cut which could accumulate to 50 grams per year. That’s significant. A peer-reviewed study published in the Journal Environmental Science & Technology found that plastic cutting boards may lead to significant amounts of microplastic in our food. This study found that chopping vegetables and other items on both polyethylene and polypropylene plastic boards releases microplastics that can cling to our foods.
7. In our clothing! Polyester fabrics are made with plastic fibers These microplastics are contaminating our bodies.
