In the European Union, over 1300 chemicals have been banned from skincare products. In the United States, only 11 have been banned. Needless to say, skincare products are not regulated in this country. As far as our skin is concerned, we live in the Wild West. Companies are on their own to include in their products whatever they want. What we put on our skin is important. And here are six facts you must know about your skin to stay healthy.
- Your skin is your largest detox organ.
Yes, your skin is one of your organs and it plays a major role in helping your body to detox through its pores. When we sweat, toxins are released from our bodies. This is also why getting in a sauna several times a week is a great way to detox and it’s also great for your heart, lungs, brain, and immune system. Exercise also causes us to sweat and detox. When many toxic chemicals were found in my body, the main way I used to get my toxic load down was to get in my sauna 3 times a week. I now get in my sauna 2 times a week just as prevention.
- Your skin is a protective barrier that regulates temperature and fights off infections.
It’s made up of three layers, the epidermis is the outer layer containing squamous cells, basal cells, lymphocytes, and melanocytes. The melanocytes produce more melanin to protect against UV damage from exposure to sunlight. Lymphocytes play an important role in fighting germs. They “grab” the germs and take them to the nearest lymph node.
The dermis is the middle layer which contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, hair follicles, nerves, and sweat glands. The nerve fibers provide feeling sensations and the very small blood vessels called capillaries carry nutrients into our cells.
The deepest layer of skin is the subcutaneous fat layer. This is what conserves the body’s heat and protects the body by acting as a shock absorber. Many hormones are produced in the fat cells of the subcutis. One example is vitamin D, which is an essential vitamin and is made when the skin is exposed to sunlight.
Together these three layers of skin provide a protective shield against heat, light, injury, and infection.
- Your skin is like a sponge.
Yes, it absorbs about 70 percent of what you put on it. Therefore, one of the fastest ways to get medicine into our bodies is to put it on our skin. Have you ever had a doctor prescribe medicine that you put on your skin? I have and it goes quickly into your bloodstream and bypasses your liver and circulates throughout your body.
- Skin and body products are like food to your body.
Yes, we actually eat skin and body products through our skin. The chemicals contained within can have an impact on our health and remember, they bypass our protective liver.
I’ll never forget when a doctor pulled me out of the audience for a demonstration. He told me to stomp on a clove of crushed garlic. Within minutes, a strong odor of garlic came out of my mouth. That doctor got my attention that day. The smell of that garlic and its properties went directly into my bloodstream and circulated all over my body. Smelling is believing. Seeing is believing. When I saw the list of toxic chemicals found in my body, I realized I must live differently.
- The main cause of aging skin is sun exposure followed by pollution and smoking.
Therefore, we must limit sun exposure. Protecting our skin from too much sun should be one of our health goals. On the other hand, our skin does need some exposure to sunlight so vitamin D can be made, as mentioned earlier.
- Our skin has different needs during the day than it does at night.
During the day, your skin is in protect-mode meaning that you need to apply natural sunscreens and use makeup with sunscreen to provide SPF protection. At night, our skin no longer needs protection from UV rays so we can use products that are more restorative.
It’s important how we treat our skin and what we put on it. Now that you know more about your skin, you know more about how to care for it.
Did you know that your skin is your largest organ? Did you know that your skin is your largest detox organ? Did you know that whatever we put on our skin ends up circulating throughout our body? Did you know that skin and body products are like food to our body? Yes, we actually eat good things and bad chemicals—even hormone-disrupting chemicals through our skin. And what are you doing to protect your skin from sun damage and chemicals?
