It’s been a slim year—a year of uncertainty due to continuing COVID-19, political unrest, hurricanes, earthquakes, and forest fires. Vacations cancelled, family gatherings postponed, plans altered, bank accounts diminished, friends, businesses closed, and friends and loved ones lost. God is not surprised. He sent His Son into such a world just over 2000 years ago. Just imagine the fears that Mary and Joseph experienced as they gave birth to God’s Son in slim accommodations in a manger stall.
From the moment Eve and Adam sinned, God had a plan for the “sin problem.” He was not surprised. In Genesis 3:15, the Bible gives us the first promise of a gift to the world as He says to the serpent:
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel. (NKJV)
Isaiah 7:14 tells more about this gift of the coming Messiah:
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. (NKJV)
In fact, over 300 predictions like threads of a tapestry foretell of His birth, His passion, His ministry, His death, His resurrection, His ascension, His second coming, and His everlasting dominion. According to a mathematician in Lee Strobel’s book, “The Case for Faith,” if just 8 predictions concerning the birth of Christ came true, the chances of that would be 10 10,000th power. But in fact, they all came true down to every detail. Only God could do such a thing. All the predictions can be referenced here.
The Bible is all about “sin.” The Old Testament can be summed up in just a few words—“Man has a sin problem and only God can take care of it.” The New Testament can be summed up in these words—“This is what God has done about sin.” He has given us a way out of the sin problem. God sent His Son to show us how to live. He paid for our sins on a cross, so we could be reunited to Him. It is the greatest gift available to man.
There has been no time on earth when there’s been no problems. Problems are a part of life. Slim times will come and go. In 1779, John Newton who wrote Amazing Grace, wrote another hymn called The Lord Will Provide:
Thou troubles assail us
And dangers affright,
Though all friends should fail us
And foes all unite,
Yet one thing secures us,
Whatever betide,
The promise assures us,
The Lord will provide.
It may be a slim time in your life. God is not surprised. There may be less presents under the tree; however, the greatest gift will always be—a Savior born to save the world.
May your Christmas be filled with His glorious gift and this wonderful PROMISE—He will provide.
