Six Ways to Lower Your Exposure to Glyphosate

May 14, 2025

There’s been a huge increase in the use of the herbicide called glyphosate since the 1970s. Introduced in 1974, the use of this controversial herbicide has increased 100-fold since then. In a previous video called “What You Must Know About Glyphosate,” we learned about the pros, cons, and conflicting information regarding glyphosate. That video will be referenced below.

According to a 2022 CDC study, glyphosate is now found in 75% of rainfall, 75% of our air, and close to 80% of Americans as measured by urine samples including children. Yes, 80% of American urine samples had detectable traces of glyphosate. This in and of itself has concerned many scientists. And remember that these chemical companies claimed it would not build up in the soils or in our bodies. Well, it has. Especially in this gal’s body. Although the research is mixed on what harms this may or may not do to our bodies, many people including me are going to great lengths to lower their exposure to this toxic chemical.

  1. Avoid living near where glyphosate is applied to crops. I’ve had many a cancer patient tell me that their oncologist told them this was a risk factor for their cancer. These folks can remember seeing crop duster planes daily or tractor spreaders and at that time, thought nothing of any effects on their body. Think again.

Then, there’s the issue with these chemicals getting into well water. I befriended a mother at my cancer center in Chicago who was the fourth person in her family of four to be diagnosed with cancer in four years. This prompted the health department to investigate. They found high levels of pesticides in their well water stemming from farms around them. So if you live in a farm area, have your well water checked. You may need to add water filtration to protect yourself, and reverse osmosis would be the best for this. But nothing can stop you from breathing these chemicals as the wind blows them across your area. And of all things, don’t spray your yard with glyphosate. When high levels were found in my body, we stopped using Roundup.

  1. Avoid eating GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) crops and animal products such as milk, meat, and eggs where the animals are fed GMO feed. These foods are heavily sprayed with or contain high levels of glyphosate.

Here’s a list of foods most often associated with glyphosate residues:

Rolled Oats (nonorganic) and instant oatmeal

Wheat – which in addition is sprayed with or soaked in glyphosate before harvesting to dry out the wheat

Barley

Rye

Corn -especially GMO corn

Corn-based products such as cornmeal (which I now buy organic and grind mine fresh to retain the nutrients), corn flakes, corn syrup which is in many things today, popcorn (instead buy this organic), many processed and packaged foods, infant cereal, etc.

Rice – although rice is usually at a lesser extent

Legumes such as soybeans (especially GMO soybeans), lentils, chickpeas, peas, and dry beans. Instead buy these organic in bulk. Show bag.

Now, let’s look at the products which contain glyphosate indirectly.

Animal products – you are what you eat eats. I want you to think about this. If you eat a chicken that has been fed GMO feed which contains high pesticide residue, then some of that residue is passed on to you. The same goes for milk products and eggs.

How about beverages?

Beer and wine – what is beer made from?  What is wine made from? And both have a high glyphosate or pesticide residue. If these drinks were made from organic products such as organic barley or wheat and organic grapes, would it make a difference?  I believe it would.

I’ve been wondering about this for several years—ever since the American Cancer Society went from recommending moderation with beer and wine to abstinence.  After so many years, what caused them to make this change? I’m just wondering if the pesticide residue is having an impact on these beverages. Maybe one day we’ll know for sure.

  1. Look for glyphosate residue-free certifications. I believe more and more companies will be testing and giving these so we as consumers can know.

  1. If not organic produce, wash the produce thoroughly and peel the skins off. You won’t be able to find everything organic. It’s no secret that the pesticide residue collects mainly in the peel or rind. This is why I’m not concerned about buying watermelons that aren’t organic. And when I choose to use the peel of a lemon in a recipe, I want that lemon to be organic.

  1. Include fiber (prebiotics), probiotics such as yogurt and sauerkraut, and citrus pectin in your diet. Fiber and probiotics such as yogurt and sauerkraut are needed to restore beneficial gut bacteria which are killed off by glyphosate. Citrus pectin is a detox binder that helps to remove glyphosate from the body.

  1. Practice daily detox. We know that toxins are all around us and we can’t avoid all of them, but we can do simple things that help our bodies to detox daily. These are using a sauna several times a week like the Scandinavians do, drinking lots of clean water, and daily exercise and sweating. Our skin is our largest detox organ and helps us to remove toxins from our system.

Maybe one day, glyphosate will be discontinued in our country as is happening in other countries. But until then, we must as I say “be the sheriff” to protect our bodies and homes—and especially to protect our children. I realize that farming without pesticides is difficult. It would be great if we could invent some herbicides that were not so toxic. Herbicides that do not have links to cancer, gut disruption, inflammation, reduced neurotransmitter production, and so many diseases.

Which of these tips are you willing to implement to protect your health?
