Flaxseeds are high in lignans. Lignans are phytoestrogens or plant estrogens that are also antioxidants. There are foods that contain lignans such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, beans, broccoli, and grains like rye, barley, wheat, and oats. However, flaxseeds contain hundreds of times the amount of lignans as any of these other foods. Flaxseeds or lignans protect women from breast cancer in a variety of ways. These ways are attributed to Sayer Ji and his website at Greenmedinfo.com:
Sayer has an extensive website at greenmedinfo.com where you can research just about anything, so please check out his website. According to Sayer’s Green Med info website, here are six ways flaxseeds or lignans protect women from breast cancer:
- Flaxseeds decrease tumor cell proliferation. When eaten, lignans in flaxseeds are broken down by bacteria in the gut into 2 estrogen-like compounds that circulate through the liver. These compounds have been proven in animal studies to help prevent breast cancer by preventing tumor growth.
- The Lignans in flaxseeds block tumor blood supply. Tumors need angiogenesis – new blood vessels – to supply oxygen and nutrients for cancer tumor growth. Flaxseeds inhibit the growth factor needed to stimulate angiogenesis according to animal studies.
- Lignans lower estrogen production. Lignans found in flaxseeds block aromatase, the enzyme involved in the production of estrogen. Blocking the enzyme lowers estrogen production. High estrogen levels have been linked to the growth of breast cancer.
- Lignans block estrogen receptors. Phytoestrogens like lignans have been estimated to be hundreds of times weaker than human estrogen. But these plant estrogens dock on estrogen receptors and prevent the activity of stronger cancer stimulating human estrogens and environmental or xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens are chemicals that mimic estrogen. Because of this docking on estrogen receptors, the effect of eating flaxseeds or lignans is similar to the cancer drug Tamoxifen—but I must add, without the side effects.
As a cancer survivor, I took an aromatase inhibitor for five years as prescribed by my oncologist. This reduced my risk of recurrence by 50 percent. But I also ate my flaxseeds each day, too. Since I no longer take an aromatase inhibitor, my daily flaxseeds are a must for the rest of my life. For those women having multiple side effects from taking an aromatase inhibitor who’ve had to stop, keep in mind that you can take flaxseeds as prevention, too.
- Lignans help generate more protective estrogens. Estrogen is broken down in the liver into three different metabolites. Two of those metabolites are linked to the growth of breast cancer cells. But the third type – 2-OH estrone – does not stimulate cancer growth and is considered protective. Lignans influence how the liver breaks down estrogen and encourages more of the protective 2-OH estrone and less of the other cancer-producing metabolites.
- Flaxseeds lower the risk of metastasis. Flaxseeds may substantially decrease cases of metastasis. In one animal study, a high flaxseed diet reduced the incidence of metastasis by 82% compared to the control group.
And again, these six ways were compiled by Sayer Ji and his amazing website called Greenmedinfo.com
It’s easy to add this gift of nature to your diet. My naturopathic doctor recommended that I get two tablespoons of freshly ground flax seeds in my diet each day to prevent my breast cancer from returning.
Flaxseeds are best eaten organic to avoid pesticide residue. They come in two varieties, brown or golden. I usually buy mine in bulk from Whole Foods, Earth Fare or order them online from Bob’s Mill through Vitacost.com I also grind my seeds every few days in a small coffee grinder that I only use for my flaxseeds. Then I store them in my refrigerator. These seeds are more potent when ground freshly so don’t buy the flax meal already ground.
Isn’t it amazing how powerful these tiny seeds are for our health! And why? Because God created them for our good health. Stay with me as we learn more about all the gifts of nature that God created to compliment our DNA and enhance our healing. Our God is amazing and the more I learn, the more I praise His name!
Don’t blame God for your cancer Journey. Instead, look at all the plants He created and the amazing body he has given us that has self-healing mechanisms, and join me on the road to good health—the way our creator intended our health to be!
